SESSION 12: Rheology of Ferrofluids and Magneto-Rheological Materials (RFFMRM)


Magnetic field-responsive fluids are a kind of smart materials which present the interesting characteristic that their rheological properties undergo, in a fraction of millisecond, intense and almost reversible changes upon the application of a magnetic field. This smart property is known as magneto-rheological (MR) effect. Roughly, magnetic field-responsive fluids can be classified into ferrofluids (FF) and MR fluids. FF are stable colloidal dispersions of single-domain magnetic nanoparticles in a liquid carrier, whereas MR fluids are dispersions of mainly micron-size, multi-domain, magnetic particles. When the carrier is a polymer matrix these smart materials are commonly referred to as ferrogels, MR gels and MR elastomers depending on the size of the dispersed particles and the consistency of the polymer matrix. The possibility of magnetic control of the flow and mechanical properties of these materials makes them suitable for applications in a large variety of technological areas, which go from lubrication in semi-active shock absorbers in engineering, to biomedicine (drug delivery, cells ablation by hyperthermia).

Session RFFMRM provides a platform among leading international scientists and researchers both of rheology and materials sciences and applications, including physicists, chemists, biochemists, mechanics, mathematicians, engineers, students and PhD students, for discussion of the recent achievements in the synthesis, microstructure, rheology, modeling and applications of ferrofluids and MR materials.
